Papastavrou: “The Vertical Corridor Limits Turkey and Russia” — “Permission for the Cable? Absolutely Not”

Greek Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou delivered a twofold geopolitical message, arguing that the Vertical Gas Corridor “upgrades Greece’s role while limiting the role of Turkey and Russia,” while categorically rejecting the notion that Athens needs Ankara’s permission for the Greece–Cyprus–Israel electricity interconnector. “Permission, or anything resembling permission, is out of the question because it is not required. Full stop,” he said. Papastavrou also signaled that implementation of the interconnector is moving into its next phase within the coming weeks and described Greece-US relations as being at a “historic high.”

Papastavrou: “Greece Will Never Ask Turkey for Permission” — GSI, Cheaper Power and Energy Democracy

Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou draws three clear lines for Greece’s energy strategy: no Turkish permission for the Greece–Cyprus cable, a structural 30% reduction in electricity costs by 2029, and a push toward self-consumption — even through balcony solar panels. Behind the announcements lies a broader plan: moving Greece from subsidising energy crises to building energy resilience.
