In a significant move, Greece recently enacted a new law aimed at modernising its military education system and enhancing its technological capabilities, based on the Finnish military model.

The new legislation focuses on transforming Greece’s higher military institutions into “centres of excellence,” equipped to award doctoral degrees. Notably, these institutions will be empowered to collaborate with businesses and industries on certain doctoral programs, fostering a closer connection between academia and practical application in the military sphere.

Furthermore, the law establishes a critical initiative – a joint Information Technology (IT) corps for all three branches of the Greek Armed Forces. This centralised unit aims to bolster cybersecurity preparedness and provide specialised training to officers in cyber operations, addressing the growing importance of cyber threats in the modern world.

To further reinforce its technological advancements, the law also paves the way for the establishment of two specialised departments – an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Department and a Big Data Department. These specialised units will undoubtedly play a vital role in equipping Greek military personnel with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the evolving landscape of warfare and national security.

The recent legislative act signifies Greece’s commitment to modernising its military education system and adopting advanced technologies, ultimately strengthening its national defense capabilities in the face of contemporary challenges.
