Ruling New Democracy MEP Anna-Michelle Asimakopoulou on Friday announced that she will not be a candidate in the upcoming European elections until the issue that has arisen with the e-mails sent to voters by her office has been fully clarified. In a press release, Asimakopoulou said that she had submitted information concerning the newsletter sent by her office to the Hellenic Data Protection Authority, as she had been requested, and that she had informed the prime minister of her decision to not stand as a candidate in the European elections in June unless the matter has been fully cleared up.

“This because my conscience will not allow me to unwittingly participate in the efforts by some to attack the institution of postal voting, the Mitsotakis government or Greece’s prestige,” she added, saying it was now up to the authorities to investigate and stating her willingness to cooperate in any way.
