The 15th conference of New Democracy came to an end today, April 7, transitioning from a commemorative event to a pre-electoral focus. With all eyes in the party now firmly fixed on the upcoming European elections on June 9, the gathering served as a pivotal moment of strategic planning and preparation for the blue faction.

PM Mitsotakis and President of New Democracy launched the pre-election campaign, for the coming European elections in the presence of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis referred to the challenges of the European elections, highlighting the achievements of the current leadership in various areas such as the economy, defense, immigration, and civil protection.

Special mention was made of Europe’s response to the COVID pandemic, the energy crisis, and its support for Ukraine in defense. At the same time, in an effort to rally the electoral base, reference was made to the risks posed to Greece and Europe by a protest vote against populist forces, whether from the far right or the far left.

Mitsotakis directed his criticism at both the opposition party SYRIZA’s President, Stefanos Kassalakis, condemning what he saw as a toxic influence on political discourse, and at the President of PASOK, Nikos Androulakis, accusing him of attempting to align his party’s image with that of SYRIZA.

Finally, Mitsotakis’s speech did not lack self-criticism and acknowledgment of the everyday problems citizens are faced with, saying, “We must reach every city, every village, without denying our flaws. We face real challenges, and I’ve taken responsibility when needed. My name is behind our ballot, aiming for a stronger presence at the European Council. I’ll need this strength for the challenges ahead.”
