Greeks Trust No One: Survey Reveals Deepening Crisis in Institutions and Society

A recent nationwide survey conducted by research organisation Dianeosis sheds light on the growing crisis of trust among Greeks, not only in institutions but also in each other.

According to the survey, conducted from January 15 to February 12, which involved over 3,300 participants aged 17 and above, a staggering 86.6% expressed scepticism about the trustworthiness of most people, stating, ““we need to be especially careful in our dealings with people.”

The study, titled “What Greeks Think 2024,” highlighted key concerns among respondents regarding the country’s future. Approximately half of the participants identified the economy as the biggest threat to Greece’s future, followed by demographics, rated at 37%.

Interestingly, the survey revealed shifting priorities regarding factors crucial for economic growth. While 32.3% emphasised the need for faster administration of justice, marking a 2% increase from 2022, 27.3% wanted more transparency in the public sector and institutions, compared to 19% in the previous survey.

Moreover, a noteworthy finding was the perception of Greece’s demographic landscape in the future. A significant 83% of respondents believed that by 2034, Greece would become a country with a diverse population consisting of immigrants from various countries.
