How moves by Carrefour, Galaxias, and Masoutis are changing the balance of power in Greek retail

The landscape of Greek retail is gradually but significantly evolving in 2025. Recent business moves are not only accelerating market consolidation but also creating a new framework of interaction and interdependence between supermarket chains and their suppliers.

The Carrefour – Bazaar and Galaxias – Papageorgiou Deals

The changes brought by Carrefour’s acquisition of Bazaar AE and the completion of Papageorgiou’s takeover by Pente AE (Galaxias) are more noticeable among medium and small suppliers. Large multinational suppliers with strong brands seem to face fewer challenges, while smaller and mid-sized companies are encountering tougher conditions.

Although these deals involve relatively small market shares or limited areas, they have already affected the balance of power between supermarket chains and their suppliers.

The Masoutis – ANEDIK Kritikos Agreement

The most significant and debated move concerns Masoutis AE’s acquisition of ANEDIK Kritikos, expected to close by early 2026. This will position the formerly northern-Greece focused chain as the third or fourth largest player in the sector, behind Sklavenitis, Lidl Hellas, and competing closely with AB Vassilopoulos.

Pressures and Challenges for Suppliers

Increased market concentration inevitably intensifies pressure on suppliers, especially mid-sized and smaller businesses. From payment terms to the frequency and scale of promotions, suppliers face more demanding conditions.

At the same time, Masoutis has been steadily expanding its presence in Attica — home to half of Greece’s population — aiming to shift the consumer perception shaped by its former smaller stores, by opening larger outlets like the one in Glyfada, with more planned in Kato Patisia and the northern suburbs.

Acquiring ANEDIK Kritikos’ network gives Masoutis a strong foundation, yet its success will heavily depend on how supplier relationships evolve. Concerns expressed privately by suppliers are significant, though it remains to be seen whether these worries reflect reality or are rooted in uncertainty during a period of change.

These developments in Greek retail highlight the importance of ongoing dialogue, cooperation, and balanced agreements between chains and suppliers to ensure sustainable growth and benefit consumers alike.
