Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis welcomed the European Commission Executive Vice-President for Technological Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy, Henna Virkkunen, at the Maximos Mansion, highlighting Greece’s strategic role in Europe’s digital and technological innovation landscape.
Key topics included the development of artificial intelligence, strengthening European defense, cybersecurity, and combating disinformation. Particular attention was given to Greece’s upcoming compliance with the European Media Freedom Act, making the country the third in the EU to fully meet the new regulation following the approval of a draft law currently under public consultation.
The Prime Minister emphasized Greece’s progress in developing AI infrastructure, noting that the country has been selected for one of Europe’s first AI Factories, Pharos, which will leverage the supercomputer Daedalus. “We have made significant progress and look forward to further strengthening innovation and security,” Mitsotakis stated.
Ms. Virkkunen praised Greece’s leadership within the EU and the country’s advancements in digitalization and security. “Greece is truly becoming a cybersecurity hub for the European Union,” she said, underlining the importance of critical technologies for both national and European security.
A significant part of the discussion focused on the protection of minors online and the proposal for a common age limit for social media access, with Greece taking a leading role in initiatives in this area.
The meeting underscores Greece’s strategic ambition to become a regional technological hub, strengthening European cooperation in defense, innovation, and security. Next steps include implementing new legislative frameworks, expanding AI Factories, and promoting policies that ensure the digital protection of citizens.
Under its current leadership, Greece is not merely following European trends—it is actively helping shape them.
