Mitsotakis pledges pay hikes: “From January, you’ll see money in your pocket” – The Elefsina development plans

With announcements, promises, and talk of a “new era” for the country, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis appeared in Elefsina determined to show that Greece is changing — geopolitically, economically, and operationally.

The Prime Minister spoke of the continuous upgrading of Greece’s geopolitical position, insisting that the country “is getting stronger on all fronts.” He also announced a reduction in direct taxation, which —as he said— “will be reflected in citizens’ pockets from January.”

“From the start of the new year, citizens will see real increases in their wages. Our first obligation is to support disposable income,” Mitsotakis emphasized.

At the center of his announcements were major infrastructure projects for Western Attica: relocation of the Elefsina port, construction of the triple Skaramangas junction, and upgrading of the archaeological site. The ambitious plan for Elefsina’s port —backed by Washington and involving the U.S.-owned ONEX Group— is presented as a strategic counterweight to China’s Cosco investments in Piraeus.

ONEX President and CEO Panos Xenokostas stated that the project will create “a new shipbuilding and commercial hub,” featuring modern logistics infrastructure, storage facilities, terminal upgrades, and energy networks.

Earlier in the day, Mitsotakis also attended the ceremony marking the delivery of three new Diamond DA62 MPP aircraft to the Hellenic Fire Service.

“We are welcoming the first aircraft owned by our Fire Service — a qualitative leap for Civil Protection,” he declared, adding that the new aircraft will also be used for border surveillance missions.

As part of the AIGIS program, the Prime Minister announced the procurement of 5+2 new Canadair 515 aircraft by 2028, capable of night operations.

“The AIGIS program represents the largest investment ever made in the resilience of our homeland,”Mitsotakis said.

With promises of infrastructure, pay raises, and upgraded emergency assets, Mitsotakis is seeking to project himself as both “reformer” and “protector” — but the question remains: will these promises translate into real relief for Greek citizens?
