The Greek government has firmly deniedrecent rumors circulating on social media and raised in Parliament byZoe Konstantopoulou’s party, claiming that the“Kimon” and “Psara” frigates were deployed to Cyprus to provide intelligence support to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), or that they carried Israeli surveillance systems allegedly “covering” Lebanon.
Deputy Defense Minister Athanasios Davakis stressed that the frigatesdid not leave Cypriot territorial waters, maintaining a mission profile fully aligned with their defensive role.“The weapons funded by the Greek people with their sacrifices are not used for any offensive action. They are strictly for deterrence and defense,”he stated, calling the rumors dangerous and unfounded.
According to Davakis, the“Kimon” frigateis equipped withFrench-made advanced radar and missile systems, while the“Psara” frigatecarries theanti-drone “Kentavros” system, already tested in operational theaters such as the Red Sea.“Logically, I don’t think the Israelis need us to provide operational coverage inside Lebanon or any other part of the Middle East,”he added.
The incident highlights the growing influence ofdisinformation onlineand the tendency of certain political actors to bring such “news” into Parliament, leveraging online rumors for political effect.
The government emphasized that Greek frigates remain onstrictly defensive missions, fully compliant with national and international regulations, without any involvement in operations by third countries.
