Friedrich Merz is trying to project resolve against Russia at a moment when his political position at home is weakening. The rise of the AfD, recent electoral setbacks and strains inside the governing coalition have triggered concern in European capitals, with at least two governments reportedly discussing scenarios for what a weakened or departing Merz could mean for the EU. At the same time, the chancellor is warning that if Germany falters over Ukraine, Europe will falter with it.
The AfD’s landslide 43.8% victory in Saxony-Anhalt has changed Germany’s political balance. On September 20, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin vote next, with the party leading in the former and seeking even greater political normalization in the capital.
