Dev. Min. on “household basket”: Prices are not just stable, but they are going down

It is the 4th week in a row that we have an average decrease of around 1% (…) Not only do prices remain stable, but they also go down” said today the Minister of Development and Investments Adonis Georgiadis who together with Deputy Minister Nikos Papathanasis, and accompanied by the General Secretary of Trade and Consumer Protection Sotiris Anagnostopoulos, visited two stores of the “Masoutis” and “Market In” supermarket chains.

After their visit, Mr. Georgiadis and Mr. Papathanasis made the following statements:

Georgiadis: 5% reduction in one month on average

“24th week of implementation of the “Household Basket” and we have an average week-to-week decrease of 1%. It is the 4th week in a row that we have averaged a decrease of about 1%. So, we have about a 5% decrease in a month on average in the value of the basket. In other words, not only do the prices remain stable, but they also go down.

Today, for example, we noticed here, in “Masoutis”, that a very large Greek paper company, specifically “Softex”, precisely because of the pressure of the basket, reduced its price by 55%, so that it too could compete with the prices of the basket. This is the power of competition and the way the basket works.

We are happy because in the middle of the Easter holidays when people will go out, travel, celebrate with their relatives and friends, they will be able to find cheap prices on good products to be able to make the Easter holidays as much as possible decently, more humanely, more happily.”

Papathanasis: The “basket” is support for citizens

“And this week is a repeat of what we’ve seen for the last 23 weeks, which is the basket holding prices flat or down 96% with small increases on some items, but overall the cost of the basket is down. It seems that the basket and e-katanalotis have supported our fellow citizens by offering cheaper products and keeping prices stable.

On Holy Saturday, the “Lent Basket“, the “Easter Basket”, as well as the “Godfathers’ Basket” are completed, which was very well received, as many of our fellow citizens bought gifts for the little children, something we had also achieved in period of the Christmas holidays”.
