An emergency weather warning was issued on Monday afternoon by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS), indicating a change in weather starting this evening with a storm system that will persist until Wednesday.

Weather Forecast Details

According to HNMS, the main features of this weather change include heavy rain, thunderstorms, frequent lightning, and local hail.

  • Today (Monday) and Tomorrow (Tuesday): The adverse weather will primarily affect the southern Ionian Islands, Western Mainland Greece, and the Western Peloponnese.
  • Wednesday: The stormy weather will expand to cover the Ionian Sea, Epirus, Western Mainland Greece, Western Peloponnese, and potentially the western parts of Thessaly.

Emergency Weather Update from HNMS

Deteriorating weather conditions are expected from Monday afternoon (11-11-2024) through Wednesday (13-11-2024), mainly affecting Western Greece. Strong rains and thunderstorms will be accompanied by frequent lightning and local hailstorms.

Monday and Tuesday: The heavy weather phenomena will impact the southern Ionian Islands, Western Mainland Greece, and the Western Peloponnese. Wednesday: The impact will spread across the Ionian Sea, Epirus, Western Mainland Greece, Western Peloponnese, and potentially the western parts of Thessaly.

According to the forecast data from meteo.gr/National Observatory of Athens, intense local phenomena are expected to hit the Ionian Islands throughout the day, with rains spreading to many continental regions, especially in western and central parts of the country.

Specifically for Wednesday, the forecast includes the transport of Saharan dust.

Weather Prediction for Thursday and Friday:

Thursday: In the western, central, and northern parts, there will be cloud cover with local rain showers and occasional thunderstorms, primarily in the west. The weather is expected to gradually clear up in the north by evening. In the rest of the country, there will be passing clouds with local showers in the Aegean region.

Winds: Southeastern in the west at 3-5 Beaufort, gradually shifting to northern-northwestern at 4-6 Beaufort. In the east, winds will blow from the north at 3-5 Beaufort, reaching up to 6 Beaufort in the Aegean Sea.

Temperature: A slight increase is expected in the eastern regions.

Friday: Partly cloudy conditions will increase locally, initially in the central and southern regions, and gradually extending to the north, bringing local rain and isolated thunderstorms in the south during the morning hours.

Winds: From the north at 3-5 Beaufort, locally reaching 6 Beaufort in the seas.

Temperature: A slight drop is expected, mainly in northern areas.
