“The real opponent is not other parties, but the country’s problems”
In an interview with One Channel, New Democracy’s spokesperson Tasos Gaitanis stressed that “the government’s main opponent is not the opposition, but the problems facing Greece.”
He acknowledged that the government, now in its seventh year in power and second consecutive term, is at a turning point but continues to work relentlessly to address citizens’ concerns.
“Numbers defeat slogans”
Gaitanis underlined the stark difference between New Democracy and the opposition: realistic, costed, and documented proposals versus vague promises.
The opposition makes proposals that are not costed. We don’t move in the sphere of theory – we put on the table only what can actually be done.”
According to Gaitanis, the government has delivered measurable results:
- 82 taxes and contributions cut since 2019.
- A €1.7 billion package announced at the Thessaloniki International Fair, based on available fiscal space.

“From Androulakis’ mouth you will not hear a single number,” he remarked, criticizing PASOK’s leader for promising a 13th salary without presenting a single cost estimate.
“New Democracy is the only party with a plan – PASOK and SYRIZA have no narrative”
The ND spokesperson did not mince his words:“New Democracy is the only party with a concrete, costed and documented program. Neither PASOK nor SYRIZA have a political narrative that convinces. That is an indisputable fact.”
Greek citizens, he stressed, can tell the difference between responsibility and populism. He recalled that in 2015 SYRIZA rose to power by “promising the impossible,” but today, “people are no longer fooled.”
On the prospect of a Tsipras comeback
Asked about speculation that Alexis Tsipras might return with a new party, Gaitanis was dismissive:
“Far from us any arrogance. We are talking about a hypothetical leader of a hypothetical party, without any political position. Our priority is to implement our program. If we do that, we have nothing to fear from whoever stands across from us.”
He added pointedly: “Tsipras’ past has not proven that he has realistic proposals for the future of this country.”
“Politics is about positions, not personalities”
For Gaitanis, leadership is not about names but about substance: “Leaders, in order to be leaders, must have something to say. Only then will people follow them. If they say nothing, they are not leaders.”
He also noted that polls are merely “a snapshot of the moment,” reminding that in 2015 SYRIZA won with empty promises, but “today the public no longer takes the bait.”
With a sharp yet calm tone, Tasos Gaitanis reaffirmed New Democracy’s position as the only party that speaks with figures, policies, and realism. While the opposition struggles to articulate a convincing vision, ND insists on measurable results and responsibility.
“New Democracy moves forward with tangible work. Citizens know who solves problems – and who merely makes promises.
