On Friday, Stefanos Kasselakis, President of the Democratic Movement, presented his plan for a national rebirth of Greece during his first official speech as party leader at the 89th Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), speaking at the “Ioannis Vellidis” conference center. He delivered a strong message of hope and transformation while criticizing the current government.
“The system has failed—and even admits it!”
Kasselakis stressed that managing the current system is no longer enough, regardless of political color. What is needed, he argued, is radical change. He stated:
“The system has failed—and even the system itself admits it! Just look at how many times its own ‘child’, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has said ‘we failed’, ‘deep state’, ‘chronic pathologies’, ‘mistakes’.”
He accused the government of deceiving citizens and presiding over repeated failures:
“After six years of Mitsotakis governance, with endless broken promises, cover-ups, scandals, and disasters, the PM’s communication team now relies on the logic of the ‘lesser evil’. The truth is, the Prime Minister is both unfit and harmful for the country and its people.”
“Time to draw a line with the past”
Kasselakis emphasized the need for a decisive break from the past:“We must draw a line with yesterday and move forward. After all, the old is collapsing. We need a future with a proud, productive, and inclusive Greece.”
Proposals for a new social and institutional framework
Kasselakis linked the implementation of his party’s plan to constitutional principles, outlining a series of reform proposals aimed at transparency, social protection, and digital transformation in public administration. These include:
- A fully integrated Electronic Health Record system
- Establishment of a “Housing Bank”
- Creation of Digital Monitoring Platforms in every municipality
- An Independent Civil Protection Authority
- Reduction of VAT from 24% to 15%
- Creation of an Independent Transparency Authority, which would also audit asset declarations of public officials
Framing his proposals as part of a new social contract, Kasselakis advocated for an alternative governance model—one that does not recycle old political figures or policies, but instead calls for a complete renewal of Greece’s political and administrative system.
