The Trump administration is unveiling a clear and forceful strategy aimed at restoring American dominance in global energy. Under the “Peace and Prosperity” doctrine, economic growth and security are tied not to green restrictions but to energy abundance and affordability.
Speaking at the Zappeion Energy Conference in Athens, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright highlighted how the U.S. transformed from a major energy importer to a leading exporter, lowering gas prices and stabilizing markets.
“Europe invested trillions in wind, solar, and grids — and yet produces only 2.6% of global energy. This doesn’t work,” Wright said.
According to him, Europe’s current crisis is the direct consequence of prioritizing climate policies over energy reliability, leading to industrial decline and soaring costs.
“There is no energy transition — only energy addition”
This phrase, delivered by Doug Burgam, the U.S. Secretary of the Interior responsible for energy affairs, perfectly captures the new philosophy:
Forget the so-called energy transition — the goal is to increase production, not restrict it.
The U.S. is investing in ten multi-billion-dollar LNG projects, aiming to:
- Reduce global energy prices and ease pressure on households and industries.
- Expand American LNG exports into Europe and Eastern Europe via new infrastructure corridors.
Fueling Ukraine and Reshaping Europe
At the heart of this strategy lies the energy supply to war-torn Ukraine. With Russian gas largely out of the picture, Washington envisions American LNG flowing through Greece and the Vertical Corridor, reaching Eastern European countries in need of stable energy sources.
Greece is expected to become a key transit and logistics hub, requiring at least one additional FSRU (floating LNG terminal) and broader investment in pipelines and energy storage.
Greece at the Crossroads
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized that Greece is now a net exporter of energy, supplying 11 bcm of gas annually, compared to 7 bcm consumed domestically.
The AKTOR–DEPA–Venture Global LNG agreement, set to begin in 2030, further cements the strategic partnership with the U.S.
Still, American LNG remains more expensive than Russian gas — at least for now. Yet, the geopolitical dividends for Greece are immense:
- A new role as energy hub of Southeastern Europe.
- Increased influence in EU energy security.
- Diplomatic leverage over Turkey and the TurkStream pipeline, now under closer U.S. scrutiny.
A Broader Analysis
The new American energy doctrine is reshaping the global balance. Washington’s message is pragmatic: “Cheap, abundant, and reliable energy” instead of “green but costly transition.”
For Greece, this marks a historic opportunity. For the first time, the country is not a spectator but a central player in Europe’s energy transformation. As U.S. investments and projects accelerate, Greece could indeed become what Wright called “the Israel of Southeastern Europe.”
The “Peace & Prosperity” doctrine is more than a slogan — it’s a strategic shift toward energy dominance as a tool of prosperity and peace.
Greece stands at the heart of this transformation. Whether it fully capitalizes on it depends on how fast it turns geography into geopolitical and economic power.
