Zakharova Warns of “Appropriate Response” – Athens Rejects Threats

Moscow Sends a Stern Warning to Athens

Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, warned Greece that there will be an “appropriate response” to its decision to develop and deploy maritime unmanned vehicles (UAVs) in cooperation with Ukraine.

In a press briefing, Zakharova described Athens’ policy as provocative and confrontational, accusing it of supplying weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, which are routinely used in areas such as Donbas, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Crimea, despite the presence of longstanding Greek communities in these regions.

“Greece has even signed agreements with the so-called Nazi regime in Kyiv on the development and deployment of maritime UAVs,” Zakharova stated, adding that Moscow has already assessed these actions and will respond accordingly.

Athens Responds Firmly

The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected Russia’s threats, emphasizing that “threats against sovereign states are automatically dismissed.” Diplomatic sources stressed that Greece always acts in accordance with international law and respect for states, and that every country has the right to enter into bilateral agreements, particularly when they ensure energy security and public welfare.

Sources added that Greece will not be intimidated and will continue to strengthen partnerships that promote regional security and peace.

Greece–Ukraine Defense Cooperation

In a joint statement following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Athens, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Zelensky announced:

  • Deepening of defense cooperation, with a focus on the maritime domain
  • Development and deployment of maritime UAVs
  • Joint exercises and training for unmanned systems
  • Enhanced information sharing on maritime threats

This move highlights Greece’s strategic importance for Eastern Mediterranean security and its supportive role toward Ukraine, despite Moscow’s warnings.

Global Implications and Geopolitical Stakes

Moscow’s warning comes amid rising tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean, underscoring Russia’s sensitivity to any Greek-Ukrainian military collaboration.

Diplomatic analysts note that Athens is navigating delicate geopolitical balances, as these actions could:

  • Trigger diplomatic pressure from Russia
  • Strengthen the strategic Greece–Ukraine relationship
  • Send clear signals to other EU nations about active engagement in regional security

Greek MFA sources emphasized that cooperation with Ukraine is lawful, strengthens defense, and does not violate international norms.
