In a sharp political counterattack, Plevris and Georgiadis demand respect for national sovereignty and critique “ideologically biased” international bodies, emphasizing Greek security, law and order, and citizens’ interests over traditional left‑leaning narratives.

At the center of the political debate on international law and migration are two leading ministers of the New Democracy government, Thanos Plevris and Adonis Georgiadis, following their recent sharp criticism of Amnesty Internationaland the International Court of Justice in The Hague. They described these organizations as “anti‑Western and left‑leaning” institutions undermining Greece’s political autonomy and national interests.

In public statements, Minister of Migration and Asylum Thanos Plevris emphasized that decisions from many European and international bodies are excessively influenced by long‑standing “leftist ideology,” suggesting they ignore the need for border security, enforcement of approved deportation policies, and protection of Greek society from uncontrolled migration flows.

Meanwhile, Adonis Georgiadis, known for his straightforward and outspoken style, called these international bodies “indifferent” to the real challenges faced by European states, stressing that their influence should not supersede national sovereignty or policy decisions that ensure social order and citizen safety.

For Georgiadis, the intervention of international organizations is not merely a legal issue but a political campaign often conflicting with the interests and values of EU member states, particularly on migration, security, and public order. He asserted that Greece is fully capable of defending its choices even when they clash with traditional humanitarian narratives promoted by major international institutions.

From a political perspective, the ministers’ critique aligns with the government’s broader migration and internal security policies, such as the dramatic reduction of migration flows through strict border control and deterrent measures—efforts that, according to the Ministry, have significantly decreased arrivals at Greek maritime borders.

Advisers note that the attack on the international legal “establishment” is a strategic move during a politically competitive period: it demonstrates resolve in defending national sovereignty while reinforcing the image of a government unafraid to challenge international consensus, emphasizing citizen and state interests over external pressure.

Opposition politicians frame this rhetoric as “cynical confrontation” with international law, yet for Georgiadis and Plevris, it sends a clear message to the electorate: the government will not yield to external pressures and will defend Greek security, social stability, and citizens’ values.
