“Let’s bring them down, let’s do what must be done, democratically”, declared the president of the Course of Freedom, Zoe Konstantopoulou, addressing the opposition benches in Parliament. Konstantopoulou stressed that “if this government does not step down, then the opposition must take responsibility for restoring democratic order.”
Speaking with dramatic emphasis, the former Speaker of the Parliament linked government inaction to the deadly floods in Attica:
“What haunts me when a life is lost prematurely is whether that person could have been saved. Learning about the tragic way a woman lost her life in Ano Glyfada, I feel that citizens are left helpless and abandoned by a power that is indifferent,” she underlined.
Konstantopoulou denounced the failures of previous administrations and the lack of civil protection works:
“It seems this woman lost her life in a blocked stream. Why were no mountain hydrology works carried out in this municipality? Why was Ano Glyfada not protected? The responsible ministers and local authorities knew that retention dams and preventive works were necessary—but nothing was done,” she said, directly accusing the government.
Political responsibility and parapoilitical dimension
Konstantopoulou personally criticized Minister Adonis Georgiadis, claiming he tried to “mock and defame the opposition”, showing total disregard for the consequences of political decisions on citizens.
She also called on the government to take full responsibility, saying:
“Step down, gentlemen, don’t burden this country any longer and tell Mr. Mitsotakis not to drag you along, but above all the country. It is obvious that you must go.”
The Course of Freedom leader linked government failure to the absence of effective oversight from the opposition, urging action:
“The opposition also bears responsibility through its absence. It’s time to stop this complacency and bring them down. If they do not step down, let it happen democratically,” she said.
Journalistic and parapoilitical analysis
- Konstantopoulou’s speech connects tragic events with political responsibility, creating a strong political issue for the government.
- The references to specific municipalities, civil protection works, and members of the New Democracy party have a strong parapoilitical dimension, aiming to highlight responsibilities and possible links between local and central authorities.
- Her call for “restoring democratic order” and urging the opposition to act generates a political flashpoint, reinforcing the Course of Freedom’s role as a party holding the government accountable.
Zoe Konstantopoulou’s speech raises significant political and parapoilitical issues for the government while bringing civil protection, crisis management, and parliamentary responsibility back to the forefront of public debate.
