French Troops in Cyprus: Turkey Warns of Dangerous Escalation in Eastern Mediterranean

The Eastern Mediterranean is entering a new phase of geopolitical tension as Turkey strongly reacts to plans by France to deploy troops to Cyprus. Ankara warns that such a move could destabilize the island and disrupt what it describes as a “delicate balance” of security.

“Such moves risk upsetting the existing delicate balance and heightening tensions on the island,” a Turkish Defense Ministry official stated, signaling rising concern over external military involvement.

A fragile security architecture

Cyprus has remained divided since 1974, following Turkey’s military intervention after a Greek-backed coup. Today, Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom retain their roles as guarantor powers under post-independence arrangements.
