Wholesale electricity prices jumped more than 6% in a single day, with natural gas supplying 38.3% of the generation mix and intraday prices reaching €260.91/MWh

Greece’s electricity market is facing renewed pressure after the wholesale day-ahead price for Wednesday, August 26, climbed to €184.47 per megawatt-hour, setting a new high for 2026.

Only a day earlier, the price stood at €173.73/MWh, meaning the market rose by more than 6% within 24 hours.

The maximum hourly price reached €260.91/MWh, while the minimum stood at €112.80/MWh.

Total electricity demand reached 439.54 GWh.

Natural gas remains crucial

The generation mix helps explain the pressure.

Renewables accounted for 39.6% of electricity production, but natural gas remained almost equally important at 38.3%.

Imports accounted for 10.7%, lignite for 5.9% and hydroelectric generation for 4.1%.

That high reliance on gas matters because it leaves electricity prices exposed to movements in international fuel markets and broader geopolitical tensions.

From €109 to €184 in three days

The speed of the increase is particularly striking.

On August 23, the wholesale price stood at €109.45/MWh.

It jumped to €167.55 on August 24, €173.73 on August 25 and €184.47 on August 26.

That represents an increase of almost 69% in just three days.

The movement highlights how quickly conditions can change even as renewable generation becomes an increasingly important part of Greece’s electricity system.

Attention turns to September

The key question now concerns retail electricity tariffs.

Wholesale increases do not automatically translate one-for-one into household bills. Suppliers use different purchasing strategies, hedging mechanisms and commercial policies.

But sustained wholesale prices at elevated levels increase the pressure on retail tariffs.

The average August wholesale price is already running significantly above July levels, creating a more difficult backdrop ahead of suppliers’ September announcements.

A warning from the wholesale market

The latest record is more than another volatile day in electricity trading.

It demonstrates that even with renewables approaching 40% of generation, Greece remains vulnerable when gas-fired power plants play a major role in setting market conditions.

The real test is now duration.

If prices retreat rapidly, the impact on consumers could remain limited.

If elevated wholesale prices persist into September, however, pressure on retail electricity bills will become considerably harder to absorb.
