PM vows to shield consumers from excessive electricity price hikes

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in his weekly address on Sunday, pledged to shield consumers from excessive electricity price increases, announcing that a European Commission delegation will visit Athens to address profiteering in the energy sector.

Reflecting on the 51st anniversary of the 1973 Polytechnic Uprising, Mitsotakis underscored the enduring relevance of its message of “unity and solidarity in the face of a common enemy.”

“Our democracy has flourished over the past 50 years, overcoming significant trials like the economic crisis. Today, we face new challenges that demand policies ensuring no one is left behind,” he said.

The prime minister highlighted healthcare advancements, including free evening surgeries funded by the recovery fund to cut waiting times and the introduction of personal doctors in the national health service to enhance primary care. He also detailed initiatives to combat youth violence, including the “Safe Youth” panic button app and programs addressing violence against women.

On economic reforms, Mitsotakis reaffirmed efforts to lower retail prices and promoted the Open Business platform, which simplifies business startup processes.

He concluded by addressing global issues, including the US elections, Europe’s competitiveness and progress in supercomputing technology.
