The need to strengthen armament programs and relations with Israel in the face of Turkey’s challenges and the hypocrisy of Sánchez.

Adonis Georgiadis: “Greece’s Strategic Alliance Path and the Hypocrisy of the Western World”

Against the backdrop of the critical stance taken by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez regarding Israel and his support for Turkey, Greece’s Minister of Health emphasizes Greece’s strategic choices and the necessity of strengthening relations with Israel.

Greece is at a crossroads in terms of its foreign policy and the management of its national interests in the region. In a recent interview, Adonis Georgiadis underlined the importance of enhancing the country’s defense capabilities and deepening relations with Israel, which he views as a key ally in the geopolitical battle against Turkey.

Necessary Armament and Strategic Alliances

As the Minister of Health points out, Greece’s armament strategy is intrinsically tied to the need to protect its national interests and deter potential risks from neighboring countries like Turkey. In recent years, with the acquisition of advanced weaponry like the Belharra frigates and a bolstered defense capacity, Greece has managed to recover from the decline of previous decades. Israel, in addition, serves as a strategic ally, as collaboration with this country strengthens Greece’s geopolitical position in the region.

“Greece must continue its armament programs and maintain close relations with Israel,” Georgiadis asserts, defining Israel’s role as “a serious and reliable ally” in shaping the strategic landscape of the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Hypocrisy of the Western World and Sánchez’s Stance

However, the hypocrisy of Western political leaders—particularly the position taken by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez—has sparked strong reactions from the Minister. Sánchez, who has condemned Israel for its stance on Gaza, simultaneously enters into arms deals with Turkey, which continues its occupation of Cyprus and challenges Greece’s sovereign rights in the Aegean.

“How can Sánchez condemn Israel and at the same time support Turkey through arms agreements?” Georgiadis wonders. The Minister condemns the hypocrisy of European leaders who, while pretending to defend human rights, turn a blind eye to issues like Turkey’s occupation of Cyprus. According to Georgiadis, Greece is the only country that has a serious resistance to Turkish aggression and should leverage this alliance to strengthen its position.

“Israel is our main ally in the region, and we must stand by them. If we are by their side, they will be there for us when we need them,” he states, emphasizing Greece’s strategic benefit from such a partnership.

The Role of History and Humanitarian Ethics

Georgiadis elaborates on the significance of the historical and cultural bond between Greece and Israel, noting that Jerusalem has always been a sacred city for Jews, which underscores their timeless importance on the global map. He stresses that to deny these historical ties would be akin to accepting that Greece has no emotional or cultural connections to key elements of its own heritage.

“If we accept that we have no emotional or cultural ties with Israel, then why should we have any with Ancient Greece or other hubs of Greek culture?” he points out, underscoring the importance of a robust diplomacy for Greece.

Greece, Israel, and National Security Strategy

Georgiadis emphasizes that Greece not only has the right but also the duty to strengthen its defense power and highlight its strategic cooperation with Israel. The country’s history, geopolitics, and security depend on forging stable and reliable alliances in a region that remains tense and full of challenges.

The hypocrisy of Western leaders, like Sánchez, who criticize Israel while signing agreements with Turkey, cannot go unanswered. Under Georgiadis’ leadership, Greece has the opportunity and responsibility to pursue a more progressive and rational foreign policy, based on strategic alliances and shared values.
