A New Era for the Emergency Department
At the renovated facilities of the University General Hospital “Attikon,” Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis showcased projects that are radically improving the daily experience of patients and staff alike.
“Against the pessimism of the opposition, see the brand-new, larger, and better-equipped emergency department. From 10 hospital beds, we now have 36; from 3 resuscitation beds, we now have 8-12; and 75 additional nurses will soon join!” the Minister emphasized.
The expansion of 800 m² brings the ED to 2,500 m², fully compliant with international standards. Waiting times have been drastically reduced, and the resuscitation unit can now handle more severe cases simultaneously.
Progress Backed by Statistics
Hospital management and the Health Ministry released key figures from recent years:
- Staff increase: 17.37%
- Outpatient visits: 5.10%
- Chemotherapy sessions: 41.31%
- Radiotherapy sessions: 55.12%
- Hospital admissions: 12.91%
- Surgeries performed: 44.71%
“The reality of the NHS improves day by day. Patients themselves notice it,” highlighted Adonis Georgiadis.
Oncology Center Sets a New Benchmark
The new oncology unit, a donation by AMKE “Aigeas” of Athanasios Martinos, features 31 treatment chairs and serves over 20,000 patients annually (a 41% increase from 2019). It provides personalized care, a survivorship clinic, and is in the process of European certification as a Comprehensive Cancer Center.
“This new center will allow us to be at the forefront of cancer research,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated.
Investment in People and Technology
The modernization includes additional staff and state-of-the-art medical technology, aiming to:
- Ensure dignified conditions for patients
- Deliver high-quality care and patient safety
- Support and train medical and nursing staff
“The NHS is changing for the benefit of patients, doctors, and nurses alike,” the Minister said.
A Radical NHS Transformation
With expanded beds, upgraded infrastructure, increased staffing, and modern technology, “Attikon” is becoming a model hospital. Under Adonis Georgiadis’ leadership, the Health Ministry confirms that the most significant NHS overhaul since its founding is underway.
Citizens are now experiencing a faster, safer, and more humane NHS, with immediate access to facilities and services that meet their real needs.
