A new international healthcare partnership aimed at strengthening the capabilities of Greek hospitals is being promoted by Adonis Georgiadis through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Sheba Fund for Medical Services and Research, associated with Israel’s Sheba Medical Center.
The Health Minister welcomed Israel’s Ambassador to Greece, Pnina Yannay, on Wednesday, October 7, for the signing of the Memorandum. The agreement focuses on healthcare workforce training, the use of advanced technologies and improving the quality of patient care.
Georgiadis presented the development of partnerships with Greek hospitals and the introduction of innovative treatments as key objectives. The agreement establishes the framework for these initiatives, with specific actions to follow as the next step.
Adonis: “It will help thousands of Greek patients”
In his statement, the Health Minister linked the agreement to specific expectations for patients and the operation of Greece’s National Health System:
“We are going to develop cooperation with a number of Greek hospitals, which will lead to the introduction of innovative treatments that will help thousands of Greek patients and upgrade the level of care provided by the National Health System.”
The statement sets out the direction the ministry wants to pursue: translating international cooperation into clinical practice through Greece’s public hospitals.
The new treatments and the benefit to thousands of patients are presented as objectives of the partnership. The announcement does not yet specify which hospitals will participate, which therapeutic applications will be introduced or the timetable for implementation.
Training doctors and nurses at the heart of the partnership
A central pillar of the Memorandum is professional training and clinical education for doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals.
The two sides will explore training programs, workshops, scholarships and clinical observation programs. The framework also includes continuing education and simulation-based learning.
This approach could support efforts to modernize the National Health System. Introducing a new medical technology or therapeutic method requires healthcare professionals with the appropriate knowledge and practical skills to use it safely.
The partnership covers both clinical skills and management capabilities, meaning that the transfer of expertise could extend beyond patient care to the organization of the services supporting it.
Artificial Intelligence and digital tools for better healthcare
In the field of digital transformation, the Memorandum provides for the exploration of initiatives involving Artificial Intelligence, healthcare data and innovation platforms.
Particular emphasis is placed on training healthcare professionals to use advanced medical technologies. The objective is for digital tools to support clinical decision-making and contribute to improved patient care.
Sheba operates ARC, a digital innovation center that brings together physicians, researchers, startups, universities and other organizations working in digital medicine.
This experience adds an important dimension to the partnership being developed by the Greek Health Ministry. The agreement provides for the exploration of joint initiatives; the specific applications to be implemented in Greek hospitals will need to be determined at a later stage.
Greece–Israel strategic partnership gains a healthcare dimension
Georgiadis also emphasized the broader bilateral dimension of the initiative:
“Our strategic cooperation with the State of Israel continues in the field of healthcare as well.”
His statement places the agreement within a wider framework of cooperation, this time focusing on education, technology and healthcare services.
For the Health Ministry, access to international expertise represents another potential tool in the effort to modernize the National Health System. Cooperation with Sheba adds an international partner with a strong focus on medical research, innovation and emerging technologies.
From the Memorandum to implementation
The next important step is now the translation of the cooperation framework into specific actions: which hospitals will participate, which training programs will be implemented, which technologies will be adopted and which therapeutic applications could eventually be introduced in Greece.
This is also where the practical impact of the agreement on the National Health System and patients will ultimately become measurable.
The signing with Sheba nevertheless opens a new channel of cooperation in healthcare, connecting Greece’s public health system with an international ecosystem of medical research, education and innovation.
The challenge now is to move from the agreement itself to implementation, with tangible benefits for healthcare professionals and, above all, patients.
