The Greek government has implemented reforms to ensure the rule of law and freedom of the media in Greece

The Greek government has implemented reforms to ensure the rule of law and freedom of the media in Greece, emphasized MEP and head of the European People’s Party (EPP), Manfred Weber, in statements to national broadcaster ERT on Wednesday.

Referring to a resolution by the European Parliament about the rule of law in Greece, Weber criticized the stance of Socialists, emphasizing that “the Socialists have much to do to ensure freedom of the press and to guarantee the entire system based on the rule of law in some of the countries they govern. Therefore, Greece is on the right path, and New Democracy (ND) is doing a good job,” he said, referring to Greece’s ruling party.

He also noted that “there have been ‘seven successive discussions’ in the European Parliament on the rule of law, pointing out that ‘this is obviously a party political abuse of rule of law issues. And I must say, stop it. You are harming the rule of law’.”

As he emphasized, both the EPP and ND stand firm in defending the fundamental principle of the rule of law. He stressed however that adhering to the rule of law entails refraining from politicizing issues at hand. He clarified that the issues at hand primarily pertain to judicial matters rather than parliamentary affairs. Weber further commented that the criticisms leveled against New Democracy and the Greek government are unwarranted and lack foundation.
