Citizens will soon be able to apply for marriage licenses, baptism certificates, and even initiate divorce proceedings digitally, eliminating the need for time-consuming visits to church offices.

In a move to modernize services and reduce bureaucracy, the Church of Greece is partnering with the Ministry of Digital Governance to make key religious procedures available online through the government portal, gov.gr, by the end of the year.

Citizens will soon be able to apply for marriage licenses, baptism certificates, and even initiate divorce proceedings digitally, eliminating the need for time-consuming visits to church offices.

This ambitious digitization effort, spearheaded by Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou, aims to simplify traditionally cumbersome procedures. After the online application, the necessary paperwork for marriages and baptisms will be processed electronically by the relevant Metropolises.

Furthermore, the Ministry is working towards automating the bureaucratic steps involved with civil registration, ensuring that all relevant updates are made and certificates are issued digitally. Citizens will be notified of the completion of these processes via SMS or email.

Beyond marriage and baptism, the digital platform will also offer online registration of these events, issuance of religious marriage and baptism certificates, and even the possibility of obtaining a certificate of dissolution of marriage, replacing the current divorce certificate.

The Church views this digitization initiative as a priority and a testament to their commitment to serving the public efficiently. This project builds upon the Church’s existing efforts in digitizing historical relics and offering virtual tours of religious sites, demonstrating their ongoing embrace of technology.

This collaboration between the Church and the Ministry of Digital Governance marks a significant step towards a more digitally-driven and citizen-centric Greece.
