Amid the ongoing wave of earthquakes rattling Santorini, a moment of hope emerged as the island welcomed the birth of a baby boy on Tuesday (February 11).

The news was announced by Greece’s Deputy Minister of Health, Marios Themistocleous, who visited the mother and newborn at the hospital. In a social media post, he congratulated the mother and praised the hospital staff for their dedication during these trying circumstances.

“In the midst of successive earthquakes in Santorini, a new life came into the world! Congratulations to the strong mother and a big thumbs up to the staff for their dedication. May your little boy always be healthy and happy!” the Deputy Minister wrote.

Despite the persistent tremors, Santorini Hospital remains fully operational, with a team of medical specialists including a general surgeon, an anesthesiologist, an internist, and an orthopedic surgeon. Additionally, six emergency response teams from Greece’s Special Disaster Medicine Department (EDC) are on standby to provide assistance if needed.
