In a high-profile appearance on the “Today’s Battlegrounds” podcast, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis delivered clear messages on Turkey, Greece’s strategic alliance with the United States, Europe’s security challenges, and the future of migration policy.

At a time of growing geopolitical uncertainty, regional conflicts, and major shifts in global energy and security dynamics, Kyriakos Mitsotakis used his interview with former U.S. National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster to project a clear image of Greece:

A country that sees itself not as a passive observer, but as a strategic actor shaping developments across the Eastern Mediterranean and beyond.

“Greek Sovereignty Will Never Be Questioned”

The strongest message of the interview was directed toward Ankara.

Mitsotakis reiterated that Greece recognizes only one dispute with Turkey: the delimitation of maritime zones in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Any additional Turkish claims, he stressed, are considered legally baseless.

“The sovereignty and sovereign rights of Greece will never be questioned,” the Prime Minister declared.

The statement was widely interpreted as a firm response to ongoing Turkish rhetoric and a reminder that no Greek government can negotiate matters of national sovereignty.

While acknowledging the recent period of reduced tensions, Mitsotakis made it clear that Athens remains vigilant.

“I Am Not Naive”

The Prime Minister avoided any suggestion of complacency regarding Greek-Turkish relations.

“I am not naive,” he remarked, emphasizing that periods of calm can quickly be followed by renewed tensions.

That is precisely why Greece continues to invest heavily in its armed forces, strengthening deterrence capabilities and maintaining a qualitative military advantage.

The message was straightforward:

Dialogue remains important, but national sovereignty is not negotiable.

Greece and the United States: Stronger Than Ever

Mitsotakis also highlighted what he described as the strongest U.S.-Greek relationship in modern history.

“Relations between Greece and the United States are stronger than ever,” he stated.

According to the Prime Minister, the strategic partnership now extends far beyond defense cooperation and includes:

  • Energy security,
  • Investment opportunities,
  • Regional infrastructure projects,
  • Supply-chain resilience,
  • Geopolitical stability.

He emphasized Greece’s growing role as an energy gateway to Europe, particularly through LNG infrastructure and broader regional energy initiatives.

Athens, he argued, is increasingly becoming a crucial link connecting Europe, the Middle East, and the Indo-Pacific.

A New Geopolitical Role for Greece

A key element of Mitsotakis’ message was Greece’s position within the emerging India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).

The Prime Minister presented Greece as the natural European entry point for one of the most ambitious economic and connectivity projects currently under discussion globally.

Combined with the country’s strategic location and strong alliances, this positioning strengthens Greece’s ambition to become a central transportation, logistics, and energy hub.

Europe Must Become Stronger

Mitsotakis also addressed the future of the European Union.

He argued that Europe faces two major challenges:

  • Competitiveness,
  • Security.

Referring to the findings of the Draghi Report, he warned that excessive bureaucracy and market fragmentation continue to hinder European growth.

On defense, he advocated for greater European strategic capabilities while stressing that stronger European defense should complement—not compete with—NATO.

“Security is a European public good,” he noted.

His remarks reflect a growing consensus among European leaders that the continent must assume greater responsibility for its own security.

Migration: A Firm but Fair Approach

On migration, the Prime Minister defended Greece’s policy framework established since 2020.

He argued that many European countries have gradually moved closer to Athens’ position on border protection and migration management.

According to Mitsotakis, effective migration policy requires:

  • Strong external border controls,
  • Efficient return mechanisms,
  • Legal migration pathways to address labor shortages.

He also pointed to the emerging migration route from eastern Libya toward Crete as a new challenge requiring close cooperation with regional partners.

The Economic Transformation Narrative

A substantial portion of the interview focused on Greece’s economic recovery.

Mitsotakis argued that the country has decisively moved beyond the debt crisis era and pointed to several achievements:

  • Lower unemployment,
  • Increased foreign investment,
  • Fiscal stability,
  • Digital transformation of government services,
  • Enhanced tax compliance.

The broader message was that Greece is no longer viewed as Europe’s economic problem but increasingly as part of its solution.

This was not merely an interview.

It was a strategic presentation of modern Greece to an influential international audience.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis sought to deliver three central messages:

  • Greece will never negotiate its sovereignty.
  • Greece is one of the West’s most reliable allies.
  • Greece is evolving into a critical geopolitical and energy hub for Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean.

At a time when global power balances are shifting and regional instability remains a constant threat, the Prime Minister’s appearance aimed to reinforce a narrative that has become central to his government’s foreign policy:

Greece is no longer reacting to events. It is helping shape them. Source: pagenews.gr
