Against the backdrop of geopolitical instability in the Middle East, the war in Ukraine and Europe’s ongoing search for energy independence, Greece is emerging as a key gateway for American LNG into Southeastern and Central Europe. The Atlantic See–Venture Global agreement, the Vertical Corridor project and the strengthening of US-Greek energy cooperation are creating a new strategic reality for the continent.

Energy is no longer merely an economic commodity.

It has become a geopolitical instrument, a tool of foreign policy and a critical pillar of national security.

In this evolving landscape, Greece is steadily positioning itself as one of the most important players in Europe’s new energy architecture.

The recent decision by Atlantic See to double its long-term LNG purchases from American supplier Venture Global to 1 billion cubic meters annually for the next 20 years, while maintaining the same pricing structure, is being viewed by government officials and industry leaders as one of the most significant energy developments in recent years.

Greece at the Frontline of Energy Security

Speaking during a special event on Atlantic See’s progress, Greek Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou delivered a clear geopolitical message.

“Greece remains firmly opposed to any form of energy weaponization, whether it comes from Russia or from other geopolitical flashpoints.”

The minister stressed that energy security has evolved far beyond economic considerations.

“Energy security is now a matter of national security and national sovereignty.”

According to Papastavrou, the Vertical Corridor represents one of Europe’s most important initiatives to reduce dependence on Russian natural gas following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Vertical Corridor: A New Energy Architecture for Europe

The project connects Greece with Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Slovakia and Hungary, enabling LNG imported through Greek infrastructure to flow into the heart of Europe.

Key pillars of the project:

  • Alexandroupolis LNG Terminal (FSRU)
  • Revithoussa LNG Terminal
  • Greece-Bulgaria Interconnector (IGB)
  • Cross-border transmission networks
  • Long-term American LNG supply contracts

For Brussels, the initiative is regarded as a cornerstone of Europe’s strategy to diversify energy sources and reduce dependence on Moscow.

Venture Global Agreement Strengthens Greece’s Role

DEPA Commercial CEO Konstantinos Xifaras described the agreement with Venture Global as strategically important.

“The cooperation between Greece and the United States creates new opportunities to strengthen the region’s resilience.”

He added:

“This agreement reinforces Greece’s role as a reliable energy hub in Southeastern Europe.”

Xifaras also thanked both the Greek government and the US Embassy for supporting the advancement of strategic energy cooperation.

Exarchou: “A Project of National Importance”

AKTOR Group Chairman Alexandros Exarchou highlighted the significance of the agreements already signed.

“The agreements we have secured create solid foundations for the future development of this initiative.”

He emphasized the geopolitical dimension of the project:

“The Vertical Corridor is a project of national importance. It serves not only business objectives but also the broader national interest.”

And continued:

“Following the war in Ukraine, diversification of energy supply sources has become absolutely critical for Europe.”

Winter Risks and LNG Competition

Industry experts also expressed concerns over the international outlook.

The Middle East crisis, threats against energy infrastructure and rising global LNG demand are creating fresh pressures on energy markets.

Analysts warn that:

Natural gas prices may experience significant volatility

Securing LNG cargoes for the upcoming winter could become increasingly difficult

Competition between Europe and Asia for LNG supplies is expected to intensify

This is precisely why long-term agreements such as the Atlantic See–Venture Global deal are becoming strategically important.

Eastern Mediterranean: The Next Energy Frontier

Papastavrou also referred to the prospects of developing Eastern Mediterranean gas resources.

“Cooperation among Greece, Cyprus and the United States creates new opportunities for regional energy stability.”

The Greek government believes that Cypriot natural gas reserves, combined with Greek LNG infrastructure, could become an additional pillar of European energy supply in the years ahead.

Greece’s Geopolitical Upgrade

Beyond the energy figures lies a larger strategic story.

Greece is gradually transforming from a transit country into a nation of strategic importance for Europe’s energy security.

1 billion cubic meters of LNG annually

20-year agreement with a major US exporter

New energy routes toward Central Europe

Strengthened US-Greece strategic partnership

Reduced European dependence on Russian gas

These developments are elevating not only Greece’s energy role but also its geopolitical significance in an increasingly complex world.
