MUNICH (ANA/ S. Mourelatos) Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis intends to highlight Greece's role as a pillar of stability, peace and security in the region, a provider of energy security and as a reliable partner and ally in the new geopolitical landscape that is emerging after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, during his contacts at the 59th Munich Security Conference that begins here on Friday, government sources said.

During the Conference, Mitsotakis will meet a 17-member bipartisan, bicameral U.S. congressional delegation, made up of 16 U.S. senators and one representative, led by U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham. Present at the meeting, among others, will be the Chair of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Robert Menendez and U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen, who is also on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The meeting in Germany, which is taking place before the arrival of U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Athens and his meeting with Mitsotakis on Monday, is expected to reaffirm the excellent level of Greek-U.S. relations and the bipartisan congressional acknowledgement in the U.S. of Greece’s strategic importance. While in Munich, Mitsotakis is scheduled to speak in a ‘Townhall’ discussion on migration at 18:30 Greek time entitled “Resetting Migration: Moving Toward Opportunities”, in a panel with European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson, Tunisian Prime Minister Najla Bouden Romdhane and U.S. Representative Veronica Escobar. According to the same sources, the prime minister is expected to repeat that migration is a European issue that demands a European solution, and that there is a need to support frontline countries that protect the borders of the EU, as was confirmed at the last European Council, which adopted key Greek positions regarding the need to protect the EU’s external borders and the need to cooperate with third countries. The Greek prime minister is also scheduled to have meetings with Serb President Aleksandar Vučić and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, and to address Greeks in Germany at an New Democracy party event on Friday night.
