Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis unveiled ambitious plans for the overhaul of Greece’s healthcare infrastructure, announcing the ongoing upgrade of 80 hospitals and 156 health centres with a budget exceeding 400 million euros.

His remarks came during a visit to the Piraeus General Cancer Hospital Metaxas, where he inspected the progress of renovations alongside Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis and Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance Nikos Papathanasis.

Mitsotakis emphasised the government’s commitment to building a new National Health System, stating, “Step by step, we are building the new National Health System, which we have envisioned and which all Greeks deserve.” He highlighted the significance of the infrastructure projects funded by the Recovery Fund, totalling 400 million euros, as part of efforts to modernise primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare facilities nationwide.

“These projects are funded by the Recovery Fund, the 36 billion euros secured by our government after COVID to support the growth of the Greek economy and upgrade critical social infrastructure,” Mitsotakis emphasised, underscoring the importance of utilising EU funds effectively for the benefit of Greek citizens.

In addition to infrastructure upgrades, Mitsotakis highlighted investments in digital health services, recruitment of permanent staff, and preventive screening programs aimed at early disease detection.

Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis commended the government’s efforts, describing it as the largest program for a new National Health System, encompassing extensive building upgrades, purchase of new medical equipment, energy upgrades of public hospitals, and reforms aimed at improving healthcare services.

The renovation project at Metaxas Hospital includes the reconstruction or replacement of infrastructure components such as floors, patient wards, bathrooms, kitchens, lighting, fire safety, nurse call systems, and electrical installations.

Mitsotakis concluded by expressing gratitude to the healthcare professionals for their dedication during the challenging times of the COVID pandemic, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting them within budgetary constraints, including increased allowances.
