SYRIZA is no longer facing a simple period of internal turbulence. It is confronting an existential crisis that threatens to reshape not only its leadership structure but also its role within Greece’s broader center-left political landscape.
As opinion polls continue to paint a grim picture for the main opposition party, internal rivalries are intensifying, strategic disagreements are becoming increasingly public, and uncertainty surrounds the political future of several senior figures and MPs.
The latest Parliamentary Group meeting exposed what many within Koumoundourou have been discussing privately for months: party president Sokratis Famellos is now engaged in a direct confrontation with powerful internal factions, while the party’s internal opposition shows no signs of retreating.
At a time when SYRIZA is struggling to regain political momentum against Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and New Democracy, internal power struggles have become as significant as the party’s battle against its political opponents.
The Political Message Behind Papas’ Removal
The reshuffle announced by Famellos in the party’s parliamentary and communication structure was far more than a routine organizational adjustment.
Following the departure of Kostas Zachariadis from the position of party spokesperson, Christos Giannoulis was appointed as the new Press Representative, while Theofilos Xanthopoulos and Kostas Barka assumed key parliamentary roles.
Yet the most politically significant decision concerned Nikos Papas.
By removing him from the parliamentary representation structure, Famellos sent a powerful signal to both supporters and critics within the party. The move was widely interpreted as an attempt to weaken one of the most influential voices questioning the current leadership’s strategic direction.
Papas appeared unsurprised by the development and avoided escalating tensions during the meeting. However, his brief remark — “No one is irreplaceable” — was enough to fuel speculation about future political moves and the fragile balance of power within the party.
For many observers, the relationship between Famellos and Papas has already moved beyond political coexistence and entered a phase of strategic confrontation.
Famellos’ Strategy and the Contradictions Ahead
Famellos continues to defend the Central Committee’s decision as a clear mandate to strengthen the broader progressive political space and create the conditions for a stronger opposition front against the government.
The SYRIZA leadership argues that without a broader reconfiguration of the center-left, there can be no realistic challenge to New Democracy’s political dominance.
However, the strategy faces a fundamental contradiction.
On one hand, the party seeks to support the political initiative associated with Alexis Tsipras and the emerging Greek Left Alliance (ELAS).
On the other hand, Tsipras himself has repeatedly signaled that he does not favor traditional party alliances or the simple merger of existing political organizations.
This contradiction has created confusion throughout the party apparatus.
Many party officials and MPs openly question how the Central Committee’s decisions can be implemented in practice when the ultimate political framework remains undefined.
The resulting ambiguity has deepened internal skepticism and strengthened opposition to the leadership’s course.
Tsipras’ Shadow Grows as SYRIZA Shrinks
Inside SYRIZA headquarters, there is growing recognition that every new poll accelerates political developments.
The debate is no longer focused solely on how the party can recover electorally. Increasingly, attention has shifted toward who may eventually align themselves with whatever political project emerges around former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
The departure of Kostas Zachariadis from the spokesperson role has been viewed by many as an early indication of broader political realignments already underway.
Behind public calls for unity, several party figures are reportedly evaluating their future options, while MPs closely monitor developments before making potentially decisive moves.
The central question facing the party is whether it can retain its political personnel or whether a new wave of departures could further accelerate its decline.
The New Clash with Polakis
Into this already volatile environment came another public confrontation with Pavlos Polakis.
The independent MP openly criticized the party leadership over what he described as delays, contradictions, and strategic ambiguity regarding the relationship between SYRIZA and the Greek Left Alliance.
Polakis argued that it is politically unprecedented for a party to appear supportive of another political vehicle without clearly defining the organizational and political consequences of such a position.
His intervention went beyond criticism.
He publicly challenged party officials and MPs to clarify where they stand and urged them to choose their political path openly and honestly before party members and voters.
In effect, he transformed a private internal debate into a public political dilemma.
Famellos Draws a Line
Famellos responded with one of his strongest interventions since assuming the party leadership.
The SYRIZA president accused Polakis of attempting to manufacture a new internal crisis and of imposing divisive ultimatums on party members and elected representatives.
He also reminded critics that similar behavior had previously led to Polakis’ removal from the parliamentary group.
For the first time since becoming party leader, Famellos appears determined to establish clear authority and impose discipline, even if that means confronting prominent figures associated with previous leadership eras.
The message was unmistakable: challenges to collective decisions will no longer go unanswered.
A Party at a Historic Crossroads
The leadership’s problem is no longer confined to internal disagreements.
Those disagreements are unfolding at a moment when SYRIZA is struggling to produce a convincing opposition narrative and continues to suffer from electoral decline.
Pressure from the Papas–Dourou–Polakis bloc, the growing influence of political initiatives associated with Alexis Tsipras, and uncertainty over the implementation of the Central Committee’s decisions have created a climate of prolonged instability.
The coming months are likely to determine far more than the future of Sokratis Famellos’ leadership.
They may ultimately decide whether SYRIZA can remain the principal force of Greece’s progressive opposition or whether it will become merely a transitional political vehicle from which a new center-left formation eventually emerges.
And that may be the most important political battle currently unfolding behind the closed doors of Koumoundourou.
