The construction of an LNG power plant has started in Alexandroupolis, it will receive fuel from a floating regasification terminal.

The ceremony was attended by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. He noted that thanks to the ambitious project, the region is becoming an important energy hub in Europe. The head of government expressed confidence that Greece would help Europe become independent of Russian natural gas. The construction of the new power plant will strengthen the energy independence of Europe, as it will use liquefied natural gas coming on ships, and not through a gas pipeline. The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Energy of Bulgaria, Rosen Hristov. He declared:“We welcome the launch of the LNG project as it will provide the region with greater stability and energy security, not only in Greece but in southeastern Europe where the demand for electricity is growing every year.”

In Athens, they say that through this project and the construction of infrastructure, Greece becomes a supplier of natural gas to the Balkans. President of Power Transmission Operator of Greece Manousos Manousakis said:

“We will be able to provide electricity not only to Bulgaria, but also to North Macedonia, Kosovo and Serbia, we are working on building the necessary interconnectors.”

Kyriakos Mitsotakis noted that the new facility at Alexandroupolis is capable of burning natural gas and hydrogen and will be able to produce even cheaper and cleaner energy in the next phase.
