Work is starting on an impressive project in Thessaloniki. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis asked for understanding and time from the citizens for the inconvenience that the construction projects will bring… It is about the FlyOver, an above-ground regional artery, the works of which start in November.

“I will ask for understanding and time from the citizens, but it is necessary to make this intervention; otherwise, nothing will change in the city,” stressed the prime minister.

Undoubtedly, the city’s ring road changes have caused concern among citizens. The street will undergo significant changes with the prospect of constructing a new project lasting four years.

Reducing the lanes from three to two will have the effect of reducing the capacity of the road to support the same traffic.

Drivers recently saw the… hassles as groundwork on the project began last spring. A team has been created to develop solutions and mitigate the project’s effects.

According to statistics, the ring road was already serving large numbers of vehicles, and these are expected to increase in the coming years.

Based on data from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in 2010, the ring road served 150,000 vehicles daily in both directions. According to the ministry’s estimates for 2030, it may reach 220,000 vehicles per day.

The road is designed to handle around 5,000 cars per hour. With the construction of the FlyOver, the regional capacity will increase to 10,000 vehicles per hour.
