The days when obtaining a Greek Tax Identification Number (AFM) or an access code required a visit to a local tax office may soon be a thing of the past.
Greece’s Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) has expanded its digital services through the myAADElive platform, enabling taxpayers to complete the entire process remotely using a computer, smartphone, or tablet. In many cases, the procedure can be finalized on the same day, either through a live video call with an AADE official or, under specific conditions, through a fully automated process.
The initiative forms part of the government’s broader effort to modernize public administration and reduce bureaucratic burdens on citizens.
Tax ID and Access Code Without Visiting a Tax Office
Through myAADElive, citizens can now apply for both a Tax Identification Number (AFM) and the electronic access code required to use AADE’s online services without physically visiting a tax office.
Identity verification is conducted remotely via video conference with an AADE employee, allowing applicants to complete the process from anywhere in Greece—or abroad.
In addition to scheduled appointments, taxpayers can connect directly with the first available AADE representative through an instant video-call service operating daily from 08:00 to 14:30.
Fully Automated Process for Eligible Users
For some applicants, the procedure can be completed without any interaction with an AADE employee.
Citizens who possess:
- a Greek bank account (IBAN),
- a mobile phone registered in their name,
- and matching records with both their bank and mobile provider,
may receive their access code automatically through digital verification procedures.
This option significantly accelerates the process and reduces waiting times for users who meet the eligibility requirements.
How the Video Verification Works
The verification process is conducted through Microsoft Teams and requires the applicant’s consent for recording purposes. According to AADE, recordings are used exclusively for identity verification and transaction security.
Applicants must have access to a device equipped with:
- a camera,
- a microphone,
- and an internet connection.
During the video call, users are required to present an original identification document, such as:
- a national identity card,
- a passport,
- or a residence permit.
Without valid identification, the verification process cannot be completed.
AADE also stresses that the service is available only to individuals acting on their own behalf. Accountants, relatives, or other authorized representatives cannot participate in the video call in place of the applicant.
Special Rules for Minors
The myAADElive platform is not used for issuing AFMs or access codes to minor children.
Instead, applications for minors must be submitted electronically by a parent or legal guardian through the dedicated AADE online platform, accompanied by the required supporting documents.
Required Documentation
Depending on the applicant’s circumstances, the following documents may be requested:
- national identity card or passport,
- residence permit for non-EU nationals,
- marriage certificate,
- civil partnership documentation,
- family status certificate,
- tax representative designation documents for individuals residing abroad.
All documents must be uploaded electronically during the application process.
AADE notes that documents sent via email are not accepted. Applicants may upload up to ten files in PDF or image format, with a maximum file size of 3 MB per attachment.
Access Code Delivered Directly by Email
Following successful verification, the access code is sent directly to the taxpayer’s verified email address.
Authorities advise users to check both their inbox and spam folder, as automated messages may occasionally be filtered by email providers.
A Broader Push Toward Digital Government
The digitization of AFM and access-code issuance is part of Greece’s wider digital transformation strategy, which has accelerated significantly in recent years.
Tax authorities have steadily transferred an increasing number of services online, reducing the need for physical visits to government offices and simplifying interactions between citizens and the state.
Government officials view the initiative as more than a convenience measure. It is also intended to lower administrative costs, improve efficiency, speed up service delivery, and strengthen trust in public institutions.
The ability to obtain a Tax Identification Number and access credentials from home represents another significant step in Greece’s digital modernization effort. By eliminating the need for in-person visits and offering both video-based and automated verification options, AADE is making tax services faster, more accessible, and far less bureaucratic for thousands of citizens across the country and abroad.
