Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited Tesla’s headquarters and laboratories in Palo Alto, California, stepping inside one of the world’s most ambitious technology ecosystems.

The Greek Prime Minister was briefed on Tesla’s work across electric mobility, autonomous systems, energy and humanoid robotics through its Optimus program.

The visit forms part of Mitsotakis’ broader Silicon Valley agenda, focused on artificial intelligence, advanced technology, investment and Greece’s potential role in the next generation of digital and industrial development.

The Greek at the heart of Tesla’s Optimus program

The visit carried a particularly strong Greek connection.

Mitsotakis was given a tour by Konstantinos Laskaris, Tesla Vice President and Director of the Optimus program, according to information released about the visit.

Optimus represents Tesla’s push beyond electric vehicles and into humanoid robotics, bringing together artificial intelligence, mechanical engineering, sensors, actuators and autonomous systems.

For Greece, Laskaris’ position also highlights the presence of Greek scientists and engineers at the highest levels of the global technology industry.

The Prime Minister also met Greek professionals working at Tesla, adding another dimension to Athens’ effort to strengthen links with the Greek technology diaspora.

The challenge for Greece is broader than simply reversing the brain drain. The government is seeking to build more permanent bridges with Greeks working at major international technology companies through investment, research partnerships, startups and knowledge transfer.

The visit to Tesla therefore fits into a wider strategy: connecting Greece’s emerging technology ecosystem with the capital, expertise and networks concentrated in Silicon Valley.

From Nvidia’s chips to Tesla’s robots

The significance of the Tesla visit becomes clearer when viewed alongside Mitsotakis’ wider California itinerary.

The Prime Minister also visited Nvidia, where discussions focused on major investments in digital and computing infrastructure in Greece and on how Nvidia’s ecosystem can support startups, governments and technology companies adopting artificial intelligence.

At Sequoia Capital, Mitsotakis met investors, researchers, founders and executives working at the frontier of AI applications in areas ranging from medicine and education to automation and robotics.

The three stops form a clear technology triangle:

Nvidia: computing power and AI. Tesla: robotics and autonomy. Sequoia: capital and startups.

Greece looks for a place in the new industrial era

Artificial intelligence is no longer simply a software story.

The global race increasingly encompasses data centers, advanced semiconductors, electricity, robotics, automated manufacturing and the enormous computing infrastructure required to train and operate AI systems.

That is also where competition between the United States, China and Europe is intensifying.

For Greece, the strategic objective is not to compete with Silicon Valley in scale. The more realistic challenge is to secure a position within the new value chains being created around AI: computing infrastructure, energy for data centers, applied artificial intelligence, highly skilled talent and innovative startups.

Mitsotakis has already described the current technological transition as a critical moment, highlighting both the opportunities created by AI and the risks associated with its extraordinarily rapid development.

Stanford next on the agenda

The Prime Minister’s technology-focused California visit continues on Tuesday, September 22.

His official schedule includes a meeting with San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, followed by an appearance at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution.

The image from Palo Alto, however, carries a distinct Greek imprint: a Greek Prime Minister inside Tesla’s laboratories and a Greek engineer in a senior role at one of the world’s most ambitious humanoid robotics programs.
