Greece Settles for Silver Medal with Narrow Loss in Men’s Water Polo Final at World Aquatics Championships

Greece conceded defeat to Hungary in the penalty shoot-out at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan on Saturday. Despite their loss, Greece secured the silver medal, a historic achievement in men's water polo competition.

The final was intense, ending in a 10-10 draw, leading to a tense shoot-out where Greece fell short with a score of 3-4.

Hungary dominated the first half, leading 5-3 in the second quarter and 5-4 at halftime.

In the second half, Greece turned the game around with three unanswered goals, taking the lead at 6-5.

Hungary fought back and regained the lead at 8-7 and 10-9. However, Greece managed to equalize once again, coming close to a victory with a glorious opportunity 17 seconds before the end. Unfortunately, the Hungarian defense denied their shot.

Despite the outstanding performance of Greek goalkeeper Manos Zerdevas in the shoot-out, Hungary emerged as the victors, winning the championship for the fourth time in their impressive history.

This World Championship was a monumental moment for Greece, as they not only reached their first-ever final but also secured a spot in next year’s Olympic Games in Paris.

On the other hand, the Greek women’s national team finished eighth in the championships.
