Washington promises visas for Bolsonaro and his family after his departure from Brazil. A money-laundering investigation, cancelled passports and conflicting accounts of his whereabouts turn the case into a diplomatic flashpoint.

“Well, I would approve. I think they’re fine people.”

With those words, Donald Trump backed the prospect of Flávio Bolsonaro travelling to the United States, adding an international dimension to the Brazilian senator’s departure following his presidential election defeat.

A senior State Department official said Washington would issue visas to Bolsonaro, his wife and their two daughters, allowing them to enter the country.

That announcement does not establish that asylum has been granted, nor does it resolve the investigation in Brazil. It does, however, create another potential source of friction between Washington and Brasília.

Where Is Flávio Bolsonaro?

Reuters reported, citing three sources, that Bolsonaro had left Brazil for the United States. A source close to the family said he had landed in Florida but did not specify where.

A different account emerged from Argentina’s migration authorities, reported by CBS/AP. According to that account, Bolsonaro and his family entered Argentina before boarding a private aircraft bound for Guayaquil, Ecuador.

The conflicting reports leave his final whereabouts unclear. Washington’s willingness to admit the family is more firmly established than the precise route or completion of their journey.

The Court Deadline and Cancelled Passports

Bolsonaro’s departure followed a Supreme Court order requiring him to surrender his passports within 24 hours, as part of an investigation into alleged money laundering.

He denies wrongdoing. The investigation and travel restrictions do not themselves constitute a criminal conviction.

According to sources cited by Reuters, his passports were cancelled after the deadline expired. The court had cited concerns about a flight risk and the senator’s substantial financial resources.

Bolsonaro had previously said he did not intend to leave Brazil and would surrender his documents.

The gap between that public assurance and his departure now raises political questions, while the circumstances of his exit remain incompletely established.

Trump’s Support Raises the Diplomatic Stakes

Trump reiterated his favourable view of the Bolsonaro family while questioning Brazil’s election.

Those allegations do not establish electoral misconduct. Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party has recognised President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s victory.

Lula condemned his opponent’s departure, arguing that he should have remained in Brazil and faced the legal proceedings.

Brasília approaches the case through judicial authority and national sovereignty. Washington’s offer of entry adds a political dimension to a domestic investigation.

The tension could intensify if further court decisions or formal requests for international cooperation follow.

What Happens to an Opposition Backed by Nearly 60 Million Voters?

Bolsonaro’s departure also creates uncertainty within his own political camp.

His campaign coordinator, Senator Rogério Marinho, expressed surprise, saying they had discussed the need for Bolsonaro to lead the opposition after receiving approximately 60 million votes.

That support represents considerable political influence. But it does not settle who will organise the opposition—or how Bolsonaro would exercise leadership if he remains abroad.

The party’s acceptance of the election result and the senator’s personal decisions now need to be reconciled within a coherent political strategy.

The Shadow of Jair Bolsonaro

The episode recalls Jair Bolsonaro’s decision to travel to the United States after losing the 2022 election to Lula.

The former president later returned to Brazil and was subsequently sentenced to 27 years in prison over the attempt to overturn that election.

The family parallel gives Flávio’s departure additional political symbolism. It does not erase the distinction between the separate legal cases involving father and son.

From Electoral Defeat to International Confrontation

The next phase depends on concrete developments: confirmation of Flávio Bolsonaro’s whereabouts, the issuance of US visas and further decisions by Brazilian authorities.

A visa, permission to remain, a possible asylum application and any judicial-cooperation proceedings are separate matters. They should not be treated as a single, completed agreement offering protection.

Politically, however, the dispute has already crossed borders. Trump’s support places the aftermath of Brazil’s election on the agenda of relations between the two most populous countries in the Americas.
