The Athens metro a pillar of growth for the role of Piraeus

The Piraeus Chamber of Commerce and Industry-EVEP welcomed the arrival of the Metro in the port city of Piraeus. According to Attiko Metro SA, the operation of the three stations will increase the total passenger traffic on the metro network to 132,000 citizens per day.

The total transit time by metro, from the port to the airport, is estimated at just 55 minutes. Car traffic is expected to decrease by 23,000 per day, and a reduction is expectede in carbon dioxide emissions by 120 tons per day. With the extension of line 3, the two lines 1 and 3 of the metro, the port, the suburban railway, the electric and 12 tram stations to Piraeus are functionally united.

On the occasion of the inauguration by the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, on October 10, of the three new stations “Maniatika”, “Piraeus” and “Municipal Theatre” of the Metro in Piraeus, the president of EBEP, Vassilis Korkidis, stated that the new extension heralds the integration of all fixed track transit means (metro, tram, electric railway, suburban train) making Piraeus the most complete transportation hub. He also stressed the importance for travelers who can now disembark at the airport and be at the port for a ferry to the islands in under an hour.

The three stations of Agia Varvara, Korydallos and Nikaia had already been opened to traffic and now the other three main stations of line 3, in the densely populated Maniatika, at the passenger port, in Odessou Square, in front of the Piraeus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and of course in the center of the city, at the emblematic Municipal Theatre. The latter, in fact, provides easy access for the public from all over the Attica basin who will want to watch a show, while, of course, we hope that the metro will bring the shopping public from the wider area closer, increasing the traffic to the shopping center of Piraeus.

Mr. Korkidis noted that one more intervention remains with the undergrounding of the electric railway-ISAP lines from Faliro to the terminal station in Piraeus to dramatically change the image of Piraeus.
