Greek Parliament Votes for Preliminary Inquiry into Triantopoulos Over Tempi Disaster

The Greek Parliament has voted in favour of launching a preliminary investigation into former Deputy Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Christos Triantopoulos, over potential offences related to the deadly Tempi train accident.

The motion was approved with 277 votes, marking a significant political development surrounding the tragedy that shook Greece two years ago.

As anticipated, Triantopoulos announced his resignation from his ministerial post during his speech in Parliament, stating: “Politics is not a profession for me, and holding office is not an end in itself.” His resignation follows that of Vassilis Papageorgiou, the Secretary General for Civil Protection, who stepped down earlier.

Concerns Over the Scope of the Investigation

Meanwhile, MP Maria Karystianou sent a letter to the President of Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, on Tuesday evening (4 March), raising concerns about the scope of the preliminary inquiry. In her letter, she posed eight key questions, particularly asking why the investigation focuses solely on Triantopoulos and criticising PASOK for what she described as a “circumscribed and elaborately worded” proposal.

Political Parties Reach Agreement on Inquiry Motion

Opposition parties, including PASOK, SYRIZA, the New Left, and Eleftherias Eleftherias, reached a consensus on the final wording of the inquiry motion. The 15- to 16-page document centres on political responsibilities for the Tempi disaster while also addressing broader concerns such as inflation, the rule of law, and governance issues affecting Greek society.

The decision to proceed with the investigation highlights the ongoing political fallout from the Tempi tragedy and signals intensified scrutiny of governmental accountability in Greece.
