Foreign Ministry: “Greece acts within the rule of law”

The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to the statement of the President of Croatia regarding the bloody incidents in New Philadelphia: “The rule of law operates in Greece.”
Stratos Efthymiou, spokesman for the Greek Foreign Ministry, said quotes CNN Greece: “From the very first moment, the Greek and Croatian governments have been in touch to resolve the situation that arose after the tragic murder of a Greek fan. Greece is a legal state. Respecting the fundamental rights of all persons in temporary detention, an independent Greek judiciary will examine the case impartially and objectively. And the Greek state always guarantees the observance of the rule of law and the inviolability of those in prisons. Any statements that distort reality don’t serve a good purpose under the current circumstances.”
Earlier on Saturday, August 12, Croatian President Zoran Milanovic, writes dnevnik.hr, said that he hoped that the perpetrators of the death of a Greek fan 29-year-old Michalis Katsouris. However, he noted that the detention of more than 100 participants in the bloody episodes could cause “civil strife”:
“They went to violence. I can’t support it. The circumstances of the murder have not yet been clarified. The police have the right to detain them for five days. Regardless of why it happened, they went for these episodes and I can’t support it, it’s just weird behavior. But citizens have their rights. The circumstances of the murder have not been clarified, they are not known. Now, if the Greek authorities could hold all 100 people with some kind of artificial detention, I know there would be elements of revenge or collective responsibility. Even the circumstances of this man’s death are not the clearest. Most of them should be released. If everyone is detained, then this is a de facto martial law, you can’t detain everyone.”
