A landmark moment for the Hellenic Armed Forces unfolded in Lamia, where the first 72 women officially presented themselves for voluntary military service at the KEYP training center.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis described the development as a “historic day,” stressing that military service in Greece is no longer a strictly male domain.
“Military service is a matter for both genders,” he stated in a public message.
The moment in Lamia – emotion, pride, and anticipation
The 72 women who entered the training facility expressed strong determination, with emotions ranging from pride and excitement to anxiety about a new life chapter.
Families and parents were present to support them, openly backing their decision to take part in a role traditionally reserved for men in Greece.
A new military service model – from obligation to “modern warrior” training
Alongside women’s voluntary enlistment, the Ministry of National Defence is implementing a sweeping transformation of conscription under the “Agenda 2030” defence reform plan.
The core objective is to shift military service from a perceived “obligation” into structured, high-intensity operational training.
- All ~10,000 new conscripts will report exclusively to 13 Army recruitment training centers
- No more standard postings to Navy or Air Force for most recruits
- Reduction of annual intakes from 6 to 4 recruitment cycles (February, May, August, November)
- Service duration remains 12 months
- Reduced service of 9 months for assignments in border regions, islands, ELDEK, and the Presidential Guard
Training overhaul – drones, night combat, and cyber skills
The new training structure is divided into three operational stages:
Stage 1 – Basic training (10 weeks)
- increased live-fire exercises, including night shooting
- pistol and rifle combat training
- grenade training exercises
- first aid and battlefield medicine
- introduction to drone operation
Stage 2 – specialization (4 weeks)
- reduced from 46 to 19 specialties
- roles such as drone operator, lifeguard/diver, armourer
- cyber security training programs
- certification through lifelong learning centers
Stage 3 – operational deployment
- assignment to military units
- 70% of conscripts deployed to Thrace and the islands
- merit-based posting system based on skills and preferences
Financial upgrades – higher conscript allowances
The reform also includes a significant increase in monthly stipends:
- from €8.80 → up to €100 for border/island postings
- €50 for inland service
- up to €200 for specific family categories
- increased support for conscripts with children or special circumstances
Food provisions are also upgraded, with improved nutritional standards and increased daily meal value.
Women in military service – what changes
For the first time, Greece introduces voluntary female enlistment under the new framework:
- women aged 20–26 may voluntarily enlist
- same training and discipline as male conscripts
- full participation in combat training, including live fire and drones
- eligibility for reserve forces after service
- service counted for social security and professional crediting purposes
The number of female volunteers will be set annually by the Armed Forces.
Political context – a defence system in transition
The government presents these reforms as part of a broader effort to modernize and professionalize Greece’s armed forces.
The package combines:
- gender integration in conscription
- training modernization
- technological adaptation (drones, cyber warfare)
- restructuring of service pathways and incentives
Together, these changes mark one of the most significant overhauls of the Greek conscription system in decades.
What comes next
The defence bill is expected to be a central pillar of the Ministry of Defence’s “Agenda 2030” strategy, led by Defence Minister Nikos Dendias.
While structural reforms dominate the agenda, the symbolic entry of the first women into military service is already being seen as the most politically and socially significant milestone of this new era.
