The first major supply agreement for European-produced gallium with a leading US technology company transforms METLEN’s investment into a strategic link in the Western industrial supply chain. METLEN Is Not Simply Selling Metal — It Is Securing a Place in the New Geoeconomy

METLEN Energy & Metals has announced an agreement that goes far beyond an ordinary commercial transaction, placing Greek industry at the centre of the global contest for critical raw materials.

The company has signed a long-term agreement for the sale of approximately 25% of the annual gallium production from the facility it plans to develop at the Aluminium of Greece industrial complex in Agios Nikolaos, Viotia.

According to the company, the buyer is a leading US technology group, whose identity has not been disclosed. The financial terms of the agreement also remain confidential.

It is nevertheless the first major commercial supply agreement linking a European gallium producer with a leading American technology company.

The real investment message is clear: METLEN has secured a buyer for a significant share of its future output before the new production facility has even entered full operation.

This is not merely a future sales contract. It is commercial confirmation that the product already has international demand, has passed technical evaluations and can be integrated into the supply chains of some of the world’s most demanding industries.

What the 25% Commitment Means in Practice

METLEN’s planned facility is expected to have an annual production capacity of approximately 50 tonnes of gallium.

Twenty-five per cent of production would therefore correspond to roughly 12.5 tonnes per year supplied to the US buyer once the plant reaches full capacity.

This provides METLEN with three major advantages.

First, it reduces market risk because a significant share of future output already has a secured commercial destination.

Second, it improves the predictability of future cash flows, a decisive factor in the financing and valuation of any major industrial project.

Third, it acts as a strong endorsement of the quality of the gallium METLEN intends to produce.

The company has stated that the material has already undergone extensive certification and evaluation procedures.

For a technology buyer, particularly in sectors such as semiconductors and telecommunications, quality, purity and consistency are just as important as price.

Why the Deal Reduces Investment Risk

Large metallurgical projects usually face two main categories of risk.

The first is technical risk: whether the facility can operate at its projected capacity and consistently produce material of the required purity.

The second is commercial risk: whether buyers will exist and at what price they will purchase the output.

Through the new agreement, METLEN significantly reduces the second risk. At the same time, the successful certification of the material provides a positive indication regarding the project’s technical credibility.

In investment terminology, a long-term production purchase agreement — an offtake agreement — can serve as the foundation for project financing.

Banks, European institutions and investors do not assess only the scale of a plant. They also examine whether there is sufficient certainty that its output will be sold.

The larger the proportion of future production covered by credible buyers, the lower the overall project risk and the more favourable the potential financing terms.

Greece Enters the Supply Chain of US Technology Leaders

The identity of the American company has not been disclosed, and any speculation about the buyer would be unfounded.

The significance of the transaction, however, does not depend solely on the name of the counterparty.

METLEN has said that the buyer is a leading US technology company and that the agreement represents the first major commercial link between European gallium production and the American technology industry.

This means Greece is no longer being positioned only as a producer of bauxite, alumina and aluminium.

It could become a European supplier of a metal used in:

  • advanced semiconductors,
  • 5G networks,
  • satellite communications,
  • radar systems,
  • high-power electronics,
  • fast-charging infrastructure,
  • photovoltaic technologies,
  • and defence applications.

Gallium arsenide is used in power amplifiers, telecommunications, satellites and radar systems, while gallium nitride is increasingly important for power electronics and high-efficiency charging infrastructure.

Gallium Is the Hidden Metal Behind Artificial Intelligence

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence does not depend solely on software and algorithms.

Behind data centres, high-performance computing, communication systems and the energy infrastructure supporting the digital economy lies an entire chain of advanced materials.

Gallium occupies a particularly important position because gallium-based compounds enable components to operate:

  • at higher frequencies,
  • with lower energy losses,
  • at elevated temperatures,
  • and with greater power efficiency.

As artificial intelligence dramatically increases demand for electricity, data transmission and computing capacity, high-performance materials are becoming a decisive factor in industrial competitiveness.

Gallium’s importance is therefore not limited to a single sector. It connects the digital transition with energy, telecommunications, mobility, space and defence.

China’s Dominance Is Changing the Rules

The global gallium supply chain is highly concentrated, with China dominating production and processing.

The European Union currently imports almost all of the refined gallium it consumes, while European demand is expected to rise substantially because of telecommunications, electric mobility, renewable energy and defence applications.

This dependence is no longer merely a commercial issue.

At a time when raw materials are increasingly being used as instruments of political leverage, access to gallium has become a matter of:

  • technological sovereignty,
  • industrial security,
  • defence autonomy,
  • and geopolitical resilience.

Europe cannot realistically pursue autonomy in semiconductors, AI and defence while remaining almost fully dependent on third countries for the materials required to produce them.

Against this backdrop, METLEN’s planned facility has strategic significance far beyond its immediate financial contribution.

From Aluminium of Greece to Europe’s First Integrated Gallium Production

METLEN’s key advantage is that gallium will not be produced through an isolated or standalone mining activity.

It will be recovered through the company’s existing vertically integrated metallurgical operations at Aluminium of Greece.

Gallium occurs in small concentrations in bauxite and is generally produced as a by-product of alumina refining and the processing of other base metals.

This gives METLEN a significant industrial advantage.

The company already possesses:

  • access to bauxite,
  • alumina production,
  • primary aluminium facilities,
  • energy infrastructure,
  • port facilities,
  • research teams,
  • and decades of metallurgical expertise.

It is therefore not starting from zero. It is incorporating a new production stream into an established and integrated industrial ecosystem.

Mytilineos Sends a Message to Global Markets

METLEN’s Executive Chairman, Evangelos Mytilineos, said the company was opening an entirely new industrial chapter for Greece and Europe.

“For the first time in METLEN’s history, one of our metallurgical products has attracted such intense interest from leading industrial economies across the world,” he said.

According to Mytilineos, the agreement reflects both the strategic importance of gallium and the confidence of international technology companies in the quality and reliability of METLEN’s material, which has already undergone extensive certification procedures.

The statement is not addressed only to the industrial buyer.

It is also directed at the investment community, which is seeking evidence that METLEN’s new strategic projects can be converted into actual contracts, revenues and long-term cash flows.

The agreement therefore serves as a message of execution: the company is not merely presenting a production plan, but is already creating the market that will absorb its future output.

The European Financing Seal

The project is not supported only by METLEN and the US buyer.

The European Investment Bank has approved €90 million in financing for investments that include the modernisation of bauxite extraction and the development of the new gallium production facility in Greece.

The financing falls under the REPowerEU framework and is intended to strengthen European industrial competitiveness, the energy transition and the security of critical raw material supplies.

This creates a strong financing structure combining:

  • European institutional funding,
  • strategic recognition by the European Commission,
  • a long-term commercial buyer,
  • and METLEN’s existing industrial infrastructure.

A Strategic Project Under the EU Critical Raw Materials Act

The investment has also been officially recognised as a Strategic Project under the European Critical Raw Materials Act.

This recognition is not merely symbolic.

It may provide:

  • faster permitting,
  • improved access to financing instruments,
  • stronger political support,
  • and greater visibility among European and international buyers.

METLEN is therefore not developing an isolated corporate project. The investment is part of the European Union’s formal strategy to reduce dependence on third-country suppliers.

The New Critical & Rare Metals Division

The organisational dimension of the announcement is equally important.

Gallium production will be housed within the new Critical & Rare Metals division of M Metals, indicating that METLEN does not view the project as a one-off production line.

The new division could evolve into a distinct growth pillar, bringing together activities linked to critical and rare metals with high added value.

The strategic logic is clear: traditional industrial metals provide scale, but critical metals offer:

  • greater strategic importance,
  • potentially higher margins,
  • long-term contracts,
  • and closer relationships with technology and defence companies.

Over time, the Critical & Rare Metals division could acquire greater managerial and financial autonomy within the group, provided that a sufficiently broad portfolio of activities is developed.

Could Gallium Generate Revenue Above €100 Million?

METLEN has not published an official revenue or profitability forecast for the new facility.

Any estimate must therefore be treated as an illustrative investment scenario, not as company guidance.

With annual output of 50 tonnes, or 50,000 kilograms, potential revenue would depend on:

  • gallium purity,
  • the form of the final product,
  • long-term contract terms,
  • international supply conditions,
  • and whether METLEN sells standard or highly refined material.

Using a hypothetical price range of $600 to $1,700 per kilogram, annual gross revenue could mathematically range from approximately $30 million to $85 million.

Revenue above that level would require consistently higher prices, additional processing or premium-purity output.

The more important issue, however, is not only revenue. It is the margin METLEN may achieve by using its existing metallurgical infrastructure.

The Main Competitive Advantage: Production Cost

Gallium does not necessarily require the development of a standalone mine.

It is produced as a by-product of bauxite and alumina processing, meaning that a large portion of the mining and industrial infrastructure already exists.

METLEN can make use of:

  • its bauxite reserves,
  • existing alumina production,
  • industrial facilities,
  • energy portfolio,
  • and proprietary research expertise.

If gallium recovery is efficiently integrated into the existing production process, costs could be considerably lower than those of a new standalone producer.

This may be the strongest investment feature of the project.

METLEN is not simply trying to compete with Chinese production under European cost conditions. It is attempting to use vertical integration, its energy base and existing alumina production to reduce recovery and refining expenses.

Price Is No Longer the Only Factor

In a market as strategic as gallium, the cheapest supplier is not always the safest or most desirable.

US and European technology companies now evaluate additional factors, including:

  • geopolitical security,
  • supplier reliability,
  • regulatory compliance,
  • environmental standards,
  • traceability,
  • and protection against export restrictions.

METLEN may therefore compete not only on price, but by offering a European, certified and geopolitically secure product.

This could support long-term contracts with greater predictability and potentially an additional security premium compared with less reliable supply chains.

The Deal as an Answer to Market Doubts

The timing of the announcement is also important.

Following difficulties and losses associated with the Protos project in the United Kingdom, and the pressure they created on earnings expectations, investors were seeking evidence that METLEN’s new strategic projects could be executed with commercial discipline.

The gallium agreement does not automatically eliminate risks elsewhere in the group. It does, however, provide a strong counterweight to the narrative of execution uncertainty.

It demonstrates that METLEN can:

  • develop new industrial products,
  • secure international certification,
  • attract leading buyers,
  • and sign contracts before mass production begins.

For investors, management credibility is ultimately judged by the conversion of strategic plans into binding contracts.

What Still Needs to Be Proven

Despite the strategic importance of the agreement, several factors will determine the final value of the investment.

Markets will closely monitor:

The construction timetable. Any delay would affect the start of revenues and increase project costs.

The production ramp-up. Moving from pilot or limited production to 50 tonnes annually is a significant technical challenge.

Product purity. High-technology applications require exceptionally strict specifications.

Pricing conditions. Gallium does not trade in a single, deep and fully transparent international spot market.

The contract structure. It is not known whether pricing is fixed, variable, benchmark-linked or subject to minimum purchase obligations.

Demand for the remaining 75%. The initial agreement is an important start, but full commercial utilisation will require additional customers and contracts.

Greece Gains a Role Beyond Energy

For years, Greece’s geoeconomic position has mainly been described through:

  • pipelines,
  • LNG terminals,
  • electricity interconnections,
  • renewable energy,
  • and its role as an energy gateway to Southeastern Europe.

METLEN’s investment adds a new dimension.

Greece could also gain a role in the supply chain of critical materials required for the digital, energy and defence economies.

This creates wider benefits:

  • new industrial expertise,
  • specialised employment,
  • high-value exports,
  • a stronger manufacturing base,
  • and closer integration with US and European technology supply chains.

Gallium Could Transform METLEN’s Investment Profile

METLEN remains a group with strong positions in energy, aluminium and major infrastructure projects.

Gallium, however, could qualitatively transform its investment profile.

It moves the group:

  • from base metals into strategic materials,
  • from cyclical industry into technology supply chains,
  • from primarily European exposure into long-term relationships with US technology companies,
  • and from traditional metallurgy into the geopolitics of artificial intelligence and defence.

The activity may remain smaller than aluminium in volume terms, but it carries disproportionately greater strategic and market value.

The Real Meaning of the Deal

The agreement should not be assessed only by the number of tonnes the US company will purchase or the level of the first revenues.

Its real significance is that METLEN has achieved four things simultaneously:

It commercially validated the product.

It secured demand for 25% of future production.

It reduced the project’s financing and investment risk.

It placed Greece inside the European and American critical technology materials supply chain.

In a world where technological leadership depends increasingly on secure access to raw materials, METLEN is not simply selling gallium.

It is selling security of supply, European production and access to a metal that sits at the heart of artificial intelligence, telecommunications and defence.

That is what transforms the new facility from an interesting metallurgical investment into one of the most strategically important industrial projects planned in Greece in recent years.
