Turkey’s defense minister raises the tone over Greek-Israeli defense cooperation, with Israeli-made air-defense systems and the reinforcement of the Aegean islands increasingly in Ankara’s sights

Turkey has launched a fresh broadside against Greece, with Defense Minister Yaşar Güler portraying Athens’ military modernization in the Aegean as a challenge to Turkish interests.

Responding to a parliamentary question over Greece’s planned deployment of Israeli-made air-defense systems, Güler said Ankara was closely tracking Greek military activity.

“All activities by Greece that violate Turkey’s rights and interests and run counter to international law are being monitored,” he said, adding that the necessary measures were being taken.

The statement comes as Athens moves ahead with one of the most significant air-defense upgrades in decades, centered on the multi-layered Achilles Shield and a new generation of Israeli systems.

Ankara Is Watching the Greece–Israel Defense Axis

Güler placed particular emphasis on the expanding military relationship between Athens and Jerusalem.

“In the changing multipolar security environment, where global and regional uncertainty prevails, the military activities developed by Israel together with Greece are also being closely monitored,” he said in his written response.

The timing is significant.

Greece has approved a broad defense procurement package worth roughly €4.2 billion, with a large share linked to the development of the Achilles Shield.

The system is designed to provide layered protection against aircraft, ballistic missiles and drones.

Spyder, Barak MX and David’s Sling Change the Equation

Three Israeli systems are expected to sit at the heart of the new Greek air-defense architecture:

Spyder All-in-One, Barak MX and David’s Sling.

The overall program is estimated at roughly €3.1 billion, with deliveries expected within around 35 months of contract signature.

The new architecture is not limited to mainland Greece.

Plans also include upgrades to existing non-kinetic anti-drone systems already deployed on islands in the eastern Aegean.

That is precisely the part that appears to trouble Ankara most.

Turkey Reopens the Demilitarization Argument

Turkey is once again trying to connect Greek defense procurements with its long-standing claims regarding the demilitarization of Aegean islands.

Turkish media and analysts increasingly portray the reinforcement of the islands with modern air-defense systems as a shift in the military balance in the Aegean.

Athens rejects that argument.

Greece maintains that it retains an inherent right of self-defense, especially given the scale and posture of Turkish military forces stationed opposite the Greek islands.

The Achilles Shield Marks a Shift in Greek Doctrine

The significance of the program goes well beyond the acquisition of another weapons system.

The Achilles Shield is designed as an integrated command-and-control architecture linking different platforms and sensors into a layered defensive network.

It forms part of Greece’s broader Agenda 2030 modernization strategy and is intended to counter a wide range of modern threats, from drones and loitering munitions to cruise and ballistic missiles.

For Athens, the key objective is to create a much denser air-defense umbrella across the country and especially over strategically sensitive regions.

For Ankara, that same capability could reduce the operational freedom it believes it currently enjoys in parts of the Aegean.

Ankara Also Sees Israel Behind Greece

There is another reason for Güler’s sharper tone.

Turkey–Israel relations are already deeply strained, primarily over Gaza and Syria.

At the same time, Greece–Israel strategic cooperation is expanding.

From Ankara’s perspective, this creates the image of a regional security architecture that could further constrain Turkish influence in the eastern Mediterranean.

That does not mean Athens has formally entered an anti-Turkish alliance.

It does mean that Ankara increasingly views Greek-Israeli defense cooperation through a competitive strategic lens.

“We Are Monitoring” — While Athens Rearms

Güler’s statement has a clear political purpose.

Turkey wants to make clear that it does not regard Greek defense moves as neutral and intends to place them inside the broader framework of bilateral disputes.

The reality, however, is that Greece’s military modernization has already moved from political announcement to implementation.

Athens is advancing plans covering air defense, drones, satellite surveillance and new military platforms.

That creates a different balance.

Turkey may say it is “monitoring” Greece.

Athens, meanwhile, is building exactly the kind of architecture designed to monitor, detect and deter any potential threat to Greek territory.
