The sweeping reforms, known as the New Pact on Migration and Asylum, are designed to ease the burden on countries like Greece that have traditionally bore the brunt of asylum seekers flooding the EU’s 27 member states.
“Our thoughts are with the families of the victims, to whom we extend our heartfelt condolences,” it added.
The European Union and its member countries "will now have in their hands a more complete legal framework, to be able to face the great challenges generated by the migration pressure our continent is facing", he noted.
The meeting between them will be followed by expanded talks. The Greek government team includes the ministers of National Economy & Finance, Infrastructure & Transport, Agricultural Development & Food, and the alternate and deputy ministers of National Economy & Finance.
